A., e)Supervisor.|Useful Strength Based on Ultimate Strengths in the Plastic Ranges /|The purpose of the research was to examine the application of the plastic theory to calculate the ultimate strength of complete members consisting of rolled steel sections encased in concrete. In Fart I of the thesis, tests on short composite columns subjected to pure compression are described. Columns were made with different thicknesses of concrete cover and some were provided with lateral reinforcing ties. These ties were arranged at different pitches and different concrete mixes were used. Slip between the encased steel and concrete was the main cause of failure of columns without lateral ties, wheres in tied columns, bond was sufficient to ensure composite action between the steel and concrete and in no case was slip a cause of failure. The] ultimate loads obtained were substantially greater than those expected for similar 80lumns reinforced by 8toel bars and having the same sectional areas of steel and concrete.
